Eligibility Requirements
  1. Earned a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  2. Been a Christian for a minimum of one year.
  3. Be recommended by a local church.

Explanations and Instructions

  1. Application and application fee: $40
  2. Church Statement: The Church Statement should be given to one of your pastors or church eaders. The form should be signed and dated appropriately. The Church Reference is an affirmation from your church about God's call on your life to serve in ministry and their support of you studying for ministry.
  3. Character References: The references are electronic forms which you will send to those recommending you for study at Leavell College. You can also include a note, if needed. Upon receipt, your reference will complete the form and then submit it electronically. No physical paperwork or letter required! The character reference must not be a family member, be involved in ministry (preferred, not required), must have known the applicant for over a year.
  4. Proof of Immunizations: The Proof of Immunizations is filled out by your primary care physician. Students who are taking classes in a classroom setting in the state of Louisiana are required to show they have received the MMR vaccination at some point in their life, the Tetanus shot within the last ten years, and the TB skin test within the last year. Each is listed on the Proof of Immunizations form. There is an option to request exemption, in which, the section on the immunization form needs to be completed. The TB form is still required if exemption is pursued.
  5. Background Check: The link to the background check is found in your online application portal. Each student must go through CastleBranch for a background check. Other background checks will not be accepted. The cost of the background check is $29.00.
  6. Official Transcript: A copy your high school diploma or transcript and either upload it to your online application folder or send it to Leavell College via email, fax, or postal service. If you have attended college before, an official college transcript will suffice for your admission. They can be sent to leavelladmissions@erare.net . For a transcript to be official, it must be either:
    • Be sent directly from the university to our office, whether by email or postal service, or:
    • Sent by you through the postal service but still in the unopened, officially sealed envelope.
    Transcripts will not automatically be evaluated for transfer credit. Contact the Admissions office to inquire about this process.

Step THREE: Complete the entrance exam.

If you are applying for the Fall term this will be scheduled after February 1. If you are applying for the Spring term this will be scheduled after September 1.

  7. Entrance Exam: The academic division will schedule the entrance exam for all applicants after the application deadline. Entrance exams are are required for all majors except Counselor Education and Supervision.
  8. Interview with Division: After completing the entrance exam, the division of your proposed area of study will schedule interviews with each applicant. All applicants are required to come to campus for the interview (exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis). You will be asked about your reasons for pursuing a PhD, research interests, and recent academic preparations and readings in your proposed field of study. Other concerns may be addressed in order for the faculty to ascertain your potential for advanced studies.

General Requirements: 

  • Applicants must have a qualifying master's degree. Applicants with degrees from a non-accredited school may be considered on a case-by-case evaluation.
  • Substantial Ministry Experience - Normally, full-time vocational ministry experience of at least three years is the minimum requirement. Exceptions can be made considering a combination of age, part-time and/or co-vocational ministry, and combined length and scope of service.
  • Current, permanent vocational ministry position
  • The Professional Doctoral Committee will approve exceptions at the time of admission. 

DEdMin Prerequisites: 

Admission to the DEdMin degree requires a ministry-related or professional master's degree from an accredited institution degree or supplemental transcripts should include hours in biblical and theological studies, organizational leadership and administration, instructional theory and practice, and/or educational foundations. Applicants with degrees from a non-accredited school may be considered on a case-by-case evaluation.

  • Applicants may be required to complete additional studies for admission or take proficiency seminars as part of the degree program.
  • Applicants will be evaluated according to specific submitted documents (i.e. GPA, Writing Assessment, Entrance Interview, Ministry Experience, and Spiritual Maturity)

DMin Prerequisites:

  • An MDiv (Master of Divinity) degree from an ATS accredited college, university, or seminary, OR
  • A master’s degree in a ministry-related area of an ATS accredited college, university or seminary and demonstrate proficiency by meeting the established criteria outlined in the Doctor of Ministry Handbook’s Admission policies .
  • Applicants with degrees from a non-accredited school may be considered on a case-by-case evaluation.

  • While the MDiv is the standard qualifying degree, applicants without an accredited MDiv degree may be admitted provided they demonstrate specific ministerial proficiencies:
    • the ability to thoughtfully interpret scripture and the theological tradition of one's ministry context,
    • the capacity to understand and adapt one's ministry to the cultural context,
    • the basic self-understanding of one's ministerial identity and vocational calling,
    • a readiness to engage in ongoing personal and spiritual formation for one's ministry,
    • an accredited master's degree in an area related to one's ministry setting or vocational calling, and
    • significant ministerial experience that enables the applicant to engage as a ministry peer with other students in this advanced professional doctorate.

Applicants for the Doctor of Education should:

  • Possess a theological, ministerial or professional degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution. Transcripts must include hours in biblical and theological studies, organizational leadership/administration, instructional theory and practice, and educational foundations. Students may be required to complete additional studies for admission. 
  • Have academic accomplishment in previous graduate studies. 
  • Expect to submit a graduate research paper for a writing assessment.
  • Complete and Pass an Entrance Exam.
  • Complete an Entrance Interview.
  • Possess basic competency in research statistics based on transcriptic hours. However, students may take the graduate statistics course during their first year in the program.
  • Demonstrate potential contribution to educational leadership in schools, churches, or other organizations. Experience is not a prerequisite.
  • A GRE score is not required.

Applicants for the Doctor of Musical Arts should:

  • Possess a Master of Music in Church Music degree (or equivalent) from an accredited institution. Students may be required to complete additional studies for admission. 
  • Expect to submit a graduate research paper for a writing assessment
  • Complete an Entrance Interview
  • Submit a GRE score (This is required.)

Admissions Documents:

A transcript is required to determine whether leveling courses are necessary for acceptance into the degree program.
